Tools to convert legacy SCADA to Ignition: what exists in 2026

Everyone asks for the one-click converter from WinCC, FactoryTalk View or InTouch to Ignition. Here is what actually exists, what it converts, and where AI now closes the gap.

Updated: 24 October 2026 · SIM Solutions

Short answer

There is no official one-click converter from Siemens WinCC, Rockwell FactoryTalk View, AVEVA (Wonderware) InTouch or GE iFIX to Ignition, and Inductive Automation states there is no automatic conversion from Ignition Vision to Perspective. What exists: Ignition imports tags from CSV, JSON and XML; third parties offer conversion tools and services, such as the SCADA Conversion Tools that Vertech acquired from Corso Systems and the open-source Ellis tool for Rockwell tags; and AI-assisted migration, where tools read the old project and draft tags, UDTs and screens for an engineer to finish. SIM Solutions does AI-assisted migrations from WinCC V7 to Ignition.

What converts automatically, and what does not

Part of the systemAutomatic?How
TagsLargelyExport from the old system, transform to Ignition's format and import. The Ignition 8.3 Tag Browser imports CSV, JSON and XML; CSV import does not carry alarm configuration.
Data types (motors, valves)PartlyMap old structure types or faceplates to Ignition UDTs. A good mapping is engineering work, and it decides the quality of the new system.
AlarmsPartlyAlarm texts and limits can be transformed; priorities and pipelines should be reviewed.
HistoryRarelyOld archives are usually kept read-only or backfilled with a script.
ScreensNo official toolRebuilt, by hand or drafted by a conversion tool or AI, then finished by an engineer.
ScriptsNoVBS, C or VBA logic is rewritten in Ignition's Python (Jython) scripting.

The options, platform by platform

FromWhat is available
Siemens WinCC V7 / WinCC flexible, TIA Portal, STEP 7No official converter to Ignition. For PLC tags, our free Siemens to Ignition tag converter turns a TIA Portal tag table or STEP 7 symbol table into Ignition tag JSON in the browser. For screens, AI-assisted migration: our AI toolkit reads WinCC V7 projects read-only and drafts Ignition UDTs and Perspective views. See the WinCC to Ignition guide.
Rockwell FactoryTalk View SE/MENo official converter for displays; on the Inductive Automation forum the answer to exporting global objects to Ignition templates is "no". Ellis, an open-source tool published in May 2026, migrates Rockwell tags to Ignition (not screens). See FactoryTalk View to Ignition.
AVEVA (Wonderware) InTouchNo automated graphics converter according to Inductive Automation's forum. Tags can be exported and transformed. See InTouch to Ignition.
GE iFIXNo direct conversion tools according to the forum; tags and screens are rebuilt.
Ignition VisionInductive Automation: no automatic conversion to Perspective. Third parties offer paid conversion tools and services. See Vision to Perspective.
Other platforms (ICONICS, CygNet)Integrators have done template-based conversions with helper scripts, for example an ICONICS project of more than 1,200 screens presented at ICC 2023, and a Python framework for CygNet published by DMC.

Why so many plants convert now

  • Windows: Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025, and Rockwell blocks installing its software on a Windows version six months after Microsoft retires it.
  • Siemens: WinCC flexible 2008 has been in phase-out since 1 October 2022.
  • AVEVA: new licences for its major engineering and operations software are subscription-only since 2023.
  • GE iFIX: GE Vernova sold its Proficy business to TPG in March 2026; it is now part of Velotic.
  • Ignition itself: Ignition 8.1 has active support until March 2027, and 8.3 (16 September 2025) is the long-term support version.

Where AI changes the work

The slow parts of a conversion are reading the old project, mapping hundreds of tags and drafting dozens of similar screens. AI is good at exactly that. It reads the project, proposes the UDT mapping, drafts the views and lists what it could not convert. What it does not change: an engineer still reviews every screen, alarm and script, and the system is tested before cutover. We describe our method in the AI toolkit page.

How to choose

  1. Inventory first. Count screens, tags, alarms, scripts and connections. Without this, any price or timeline is a guess.
  2. Decide what to keep. A migration is the moment to drop unused tags and screens and fix alarm floods.
  3. Pilot one area. Convert one area with the chosen tool or method and measure how much finishing it needs.
  4. Then scale. Apply the method to the rest, area by area, with the old system as fallback.

Questions we get

Is there an official WinCC to Ignition converter?

No. Inductive Automation does not offer one. Tags can be exported and imported; screens and scripts are rebuilt, by hand or drafted with AI and finished by an engineer.

Can FactoryTalk View displays be imported into Ignition?

Not directly. Displays and global objects are rebuilt. Rockwell tags can be migrated with tools such as the open-source Ellis project.

Does Ignition 8.3 convert Vision to Perspective?

No. Inductive Automation says there is no automatic conversion; screens are rebuilt. Third parties offer paid conversion tools and services.

How long does a conversion take?

That depends on the number of screens, tags and scripts and on how clean the project is. An inventory of the old project is the only reliable basis for a plan.
