AI in OT update, Q4 2026

What changed this year for AI in PLC and SCADA engineering, and what it means for your plant. Our quarterly update, with sources.

Updated: 25 October 2026 · SIM Solutions

Short answer

The main developments for AI in industrial automation in 2026: Rockwell Automation announced FactoryTalk Conductor for AI agents across engineering and maintenance (21 October 2026, available in Q1 2027); Inductive Automation showed the Ignition 2027 roadmap with AI-assisted engineering at ICC 2026; Siemens made the Eigen Engineering Agent for TIA Portal generally available in April 2026; and the Model Context Protocol spread to CODESYS, OPC UA and Ignition. In the EU, the first energy audits under Directive (EU) 2023/1791 were due on 11 October 2026.

Rockwell announces FactoryTalk Conductor

On 21 October 2026 Rockwell Automation announced FactoryTalk Conductor, a platform that coordinates AI agents, skills and workflows from engineering to maintenance. Engineers start tasks in natural language. At launch it works with Studio 5000 Logix Designer, Logix Echo, Emulate3D and FactoryTalk Optix. Commercial availability is planned for the first quarter of 2027.

What it means: AI agents are moving into the engineering tools of every major PLC vendor. Plan now which tasks you would let an agent prepare, and who approves.

Ignition 2027 roadmap shown at ICC 2026

At the Ignition Community Conference in Sacramento (22 to 24 September 2026), Inductive Automation showed the roadmap for Ignition 2027. According to ARC Advisory Group it is the first release in a yearly major-release rhythm, with Catalyst for AI-assisted engineering and diagnostics, Excel-based tag import and export, partial gateway import and export, and a time-series historian built with Tiger Data (TimescaleDB). DMC also reported a Beckhoff ADS driver and an AWS connector. Ignition 8.3 remains the long-term supported version.

What it means: If you plan an Ignition project in 2027, check which features you need from 2027 and which you can do on 8.3 today.

Siemens Eigen Engineering Agent in production

Siemens declared the Eigen Engineering Agent generally available on 20 April 2026 and added new capabilities on 17 June 2026. It works inside TIA Portal and prepares engineering tasks for the engineer to review.

What it means: For Siemens users, AI inside TIA Portal is no longer a preview. The question is how you test and approve what it generates.

MCP becomes the standard way to connect AI to automation tools

CODESYS released version 1.0 of its Development System MCP Server on 28 April 2026 and version 1.1 on 22 July 2026. The OPC Foundation publishes an OPC UA MCP server package on NuGet. Inductive Automation's MCP Module, announced in September 2025, has been in early access since February 2026.

What it means: The Model Context Protocol is becoming the common plug between AI and plant systems. We build our own connectors on it; ask your vendors about theirs.

Migration tools keep growing

Ellis, an open-source tool that migrates Rockwell tags to Ignition, was published on 1 May 2026. In March 2026 GE Vernova completed the sale of its Proficy software business, which includes iFIX, to TPG.

What it means: Tag migration is getting easier; screens, scripts and alarms remain engineering work.

EU energy audits are due

Under the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (EU) 2023/1791, companies using on average more than 10 TJ of energy a year (about 2.8 GWh) and without a certified energy management system needed a first energy audit by 11 October 2026. Above 85 TJ (about 23.6 GWh), a certified energy management system is required by 11 October 2027.

What it means: Both need measured energy data per user. That data often sits unused in PLCs, drives and meters.
